You know something is scary if you are hearing screams all the way from the parking lot, see an ambulance on site and popsicle sticks being given away to little kids to keep the monsters away. The Spooky Walk, located at Camp Paquatuck in Center Moriches, New York, has been one of the most famous Halloween attractions on Long Island for over 25 years. Every year Camp Paquatuck hosts the Spooky Walk, a fundraiser they hold during the two weekends before Halloween, where all the proceeds go to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, benefitting kids and adults with special needs.

I went this past Saturday with a large group of 13 people. After parking on Montauk Highway, we started on the long walk alongside the Mount Pleasant Cemetery where we had to wait on line with the other attendees to get in, and where people were selling light-up swords, grilles, hats, gloves, and emoji necklaces. In the distance, air horns would go off, and blood-curdling screams echoed through the woods. Double doors decked out in orange lights marked the beginning of the Spooky Walk. Once we received our instructions to run–very fast!–we were chased through blinding strobe lights into the dark woods where people dressed in creepy costumes and terrifying makeup would follow us, mimic us, jump at us, or even block us from going forward, isolating each of us at times from our group. Having Jason Voorhees run after you with his chainsaw is pretty terrifying. But having a human dog charge at our group left my mom screaming bloody murder and tripping my 14-year-old sister to get away. When an old witch scared my cousin, he held up his popsicle stick and she immediately dropped to the ground and moaned, “I can’t even kill myself it hurt so much!” Even still, my cousin stopped his trash talking and clung to his mom for the rest of the walk. Sometimes, though, the popsicle stick doesn’t work. Like when our friend Dominick held up his popsicle stick and the zombie girl taunting him just ripped it out of his hand, threw it on the ground and laughed, “This won’t protect you now!” He said later on he never thought he was capable of such high-pitched screaming. But we all survived. We all laughed. And we even danced through the Undead Dance Party! Well, I had no choice, really. They blocked the exit unless I had a dance-off with the zombie king.

So if you have the opportunity to go to the Camp Paquatuck Spooky Walk, go! The money goes to a great cause, the thrills are unforgettable, the food is delightful, and so what if you you can’t shake off the memory of the creepy Pennywise calling to you like it did me, “Come BACK, Kitty!” Eventually, you’ll fall asleep…with the light on.
